Road to South St Kitts

Roadway to a Tropical Heaven

Tropical Diversion:

We all look for a diversion from the ordinary humdrum of work or everyday life. If you are like us, you seek that Roadway to a Tropical Heaven in the Caribbean with sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and a beach bar. We live in Florida so for those from other locales it probably seems odd for two residents of the Sunshine State to seek such destinations. That is because remote beach resorts with good, attentive service are a rarity in Florida, perhaps non existent.

Qualifications:

The resort must be small, 50 +/- rooms, tropical heaven type beautiful sandy beaches, choice of restaurants, non beach activities such as sailing, hiking, biking, and of course, great service. Our experience is that the more difficult the trip getting to the resort, the more likely it will meet our expectations. The cost of the stay, however, will rise commensurate with the trip difficulty. Another issue we have is when a beach resort is also a golfing resort because the golf always dilutes the resort’s focus on the beach and beach related activities.

St Kitts:

St Kitts, along with its smaller neighbor, Nevis, is the smallest sovereign nation in the Western Hemisphere. It is an island country in the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. It is the only federation in the Caribbean. The capital of this two island nation is Basseterre, St Kitts (Saint Christopher). St Kitts violates one of our premises; difficulty in getting to the resort. American Airlines has daily direct flights from Miami to St Kitts.

Park Hyatt Resort:

We had never been to St Kitts or Nevis before. We first secured reservations at the Four Seasons on Nevis. Four weeks prior to our vacation we learned the Four Seasons Resort was under major construction. Oddly, the Four Seasons had no mention of this on their web site. We frantically searched for an alternative.

Then we found The Park Hyatt, St Kitts. Fortunately they had available accommodations. Their website pictures were like a roadway to heaven. In person, the views were even better. The resort has three very good restaurants and two pools with a beach bar. The views from every room are spectacular. This is because they are views of the beach and the island of Nevis with its volcano. There is the usual assortment of beach and water activities. There is a very complete, modern gym and spa provide for a wonderful experience. The large mountain in the picture above, shrouded in clouds, is a dormant volcano on the southern island of Nevis.

There seems to be available land adjacent to the resort that could lend itself quite nicely for hiking trails or biking trails. With the resort being fairly isolated, and without biking or hiking trails, a couple of days are more than enough time to enjoy what the resort offers. Unfortunately major cruise lines unload thousands of passengers in Basseterre on a frequent basis. Even though Basseterre is quite a distance away from the resort the cruise lines provide bus trips for their passengers to enjoy an adjacent beach to the Park Hyatt. Not so good! A return trip is likely, but not for the 7 days of this last trip.
