The Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance has attracted car enthusiasts from around the United States annually since 2002. This annual gathering during the first week of November showcases a remarkable collection of vintage, classic, and exotic cars. Concours is a French term meaning “competition”. Consequently, when combined with “d’Elegance”, the term immediately conjures images of elegant, beautiful, and prestigious vehicles.
Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance
This year the weekend events were front and center in the Low Country from Nov 2nd thru Nov 5th. The Concours Showcase is always held on the final day. Firstly, because it is always the favorite event of the weekend. Secondly, because of the rarity of the automobiles entered. Thirdly, it is when the awards are announced. The perfectly manicured golf course at the Port Royal Golf Club provided the backdrop for 150 exceptional vehicles. Expert judges meticulously examined every detail, awarding accolades for the most outstanding examples of automotive excellence. These cars were the result of a true passion for the automobile and lots of money from the owners.
Car Club Showcase
However, I’m getting ahead of myself. The venue packed weekend started with the Grand Motoring Film Festival on Thursday evening, followed by the “Flights and Fancy” Aeroport Gala on Friday. Then on Saturday The Car Club Showcase featured about 200 cars from various car clubs around the Southeastern US. The car club members I spoke with were mostly retirees pursuing their dream. A couple of the clubs were even from our home town of Bluffton, SC. Our MGB would feel at home in the Carolina Dreamers Car Club.
The festivities then continued into Sunday with the actual Concours d’Elegance.
Two of the oldest production cars produced in the United States, the 1895 Duryea and the 1895 Hayes, were the focus of the event. The winner of the first Indianapolis 500, the 1911 Mormon Wasp, was also on display. Along side the Wasp was Dale Earnhadt Jr.’s winning NASCAR ride. Conveniently, they provided a stunning comparison of the old versus the new.
The Automobiles
As soon as we walked through the gates of the event we were immediately in an automobile wonderland. Above all, each automobile was a testament to the skill, love and ingenuity of their owners. From timeless classics and unique prototypes, to carefully restored automobile treasures, this weekend event had it all.
The sight of meticulously restored vintage cars with their gleaming paint catching the sunlight was stunning. Graceful curves and intricate detailing of pre-war antiques embodied the glamour of the automobile. The post-war American classics exemplified the golden age of automobile design. Intermingled was a breathtaking array of current day sports cars with their sleek lines and raw power. Ah, McLaren’s, Aston Martins, Ferraris and Lamborghini’s, to name but a few.
Legends of the Autobahn

There was also a 75th anniversary celebration for the German motoring powerhouse, Porsche. However, an impressive collection of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi vehicles were staged nearby to offer their competing models. We were able to view the evolution of automotive technology and marvel at the luxury and precision for which these brands are synonymous.
Aero Expo
For aviation enthusiasts, the Aero Expo provided a treat with its display of vintage aircraft and personal aircraft. Although the Aero Expo was limited in the number of planes on view, it was fun be able to get a close-up appreciation of the different planes and gain insight into the history and significance of these aerial marvels.
Driving Experiences
During the Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance weekend attendees were offered the chance to get behind the wheel and experience the performance of some of the finest automobiles in the world. Unfortunately, we ran out of time on Saturday and did not get to enjoy any exhilarating driving experiences. Consequently we have something to look forward to next year.
Educational Seminars
If you were so inclined, the Concours weekend also offered engaging seminars and panel discussions on automotive history and craftsmanship. Experts and industry insiders shared their insights, offering a deeper appreciation for the legacy of automobiles.
Its a Wrap!
The Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance provided an immersive experience for automotive aficionados, showcasing the beauty and innovation of classic and vintage cars from around the globe. From the meticulously restored automobiles to the thrilling weekend events, every moment spent at this prestigious event was a treasured memory. Of all the cars on display, my favorite car was a hand crafted, Auburn Station Wagon because of the incredible workmanship and creativity. Patti’s favorite car was a 2023 Aston Martin DB12 Volante. That is to say she found it the most alluring automobile.
Next year, November 1st through the 3rd, grab your camera and join us in the enchanting world of the Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance.
